Chapter Eighteen

As soon as Anjeli awakened, she felt this would be an auspicious day.

Her job interview with Professor Fleagle was late enough that she would have time to be very careful about her appearance but early enough that she would be home in time to make Kumar some of his favorite dishes for dinner and rasgoolas, his favorite dessert. Maybe they could get out of the stuffy apartment for a walk afterward, and she could tell Kumar about her day. She just knew she would get the job, and she could allay his fears about her working. She would seek his advice about the best and safest way for her to travel to NUNY; he knew the subway system top to bottom and would appreciate being consulted about that.

Anjeli went out to the kitchen to make breakfast for Kumar. Usually he just rushed some coffee and toast, but today she would offer to make him one of those omelets he loved but hardly ever had time for.

She greeted him cheerfully and set a cup of coffee before him. “Isn’t it a beautiful day? We are really getting some nice spring weather now.” Kumar seemed preoccupied and just stared moodily into his cup. Anjeli’s optimism was a little dashed, but she persisted in her one-sided conversation. “I made my job interview for just noontime, “she continued 149
